Memo at midnight: For those hurting right now…

Nearly every day I read blog posts from people who are in pain as a result of depression, anxiety. personality disorders, etc… and I ask myself, why??? Why are so many people in pain?

Our current society seems to be driving a lot of people crazy… the reasons may be complicated… or maybe not. Our economy is broken, our families are often broken… and apathy seems to be a constant that is increasingly becoming the norm.

How to change things for the better is the complicated part. It’s really a mind-numbing problem when you think about it. What you can do is work to make things better in your own small world.

To everyone having a bad day or week or month or year… hang in there. Find happiness and joy in the smallest of things. Find treatments and solutions that work for you.

Never lose hope! When all else is lost, hope can always be found.

  1. Excellent advice, JoAnn. Modest first steps may seem inconsequential, though they’re invaluable, actually, as they orient us in right direction. They inspire relief that, finally, something good is happening.

    It’s “island hopping,” really. We struggle to reach A, collapsing in exhaustion as we just grasp it with our fingernails, After time to rest, B glitters on the horizon. Still so much work, but we make it, only to spy C’s golden shores….

    So it continues. Eventually, looking back on the journey amazes us at how much progress we’ve made so far, and on the resources and ingenuity we never knew we had.

      It’s true that most things in life take a lot of work and we can end up exhausted. It’s always refreshing to step back and derive happiness from the smallest of things too. 🦋

      • A good philosophy, JoAnn. You’re honest and realistic about the challenges, though you don’t neglect some of the things that motivate us past them.

        A life-changing triumph doesn’t await every time (though you never know), yet oftentimes only something “small” – a smile, a kind word, “the best peach I’ve had in years” – will salvage what otherwise would’ve been a bad day.

  2. Depression and anxiety are difficult states to engage. I try to remember that depression is something that I have on occasion but it’s never who I am. Cheri Huber says, ” The quality of your life will depend on the focus of your attention.” I believe that.
